Are You at risk for Blood Clots?


Summer is yet again here and many of my patients are travelling on vacations, or visiting friends and relatives across the country. Before they go, however, I like to write them some pre-travel improve a potentially serious medical condition that can occur with very long periods of sitting in limousines, trains, and airplanes... blood clots.

Up to 600, 000 Americans develop clots year after year with 1 in 3 residence developing serious medical complications from. I'd like to inform you of the same advice WHICH I give my patients during the symptoms and risk factors for producing blood clots and how can one prevent them.

What Are Blood clots?

They are clumps together with debris or fat, coagulated strawberry, or even surgical materials, within veins. They can start in the legs and travel amongst the vein system to chemistry of the brain, heart or lungs and cause a heart attack, stroke, or pulmonary embolism.

What Are The Symptoms of a Blood Clot?

The symptoms of a clot are varied, relying on their origin, but almost always have sudden and/or severe pain at the site. All require immediate medical attention. Here's a list of the common types of clots by their symptoms:

Legs: Blood clots in the legs is often overlooked as a torn to pieces muscle, as they can appear like a "Charlie Horse" fashion cramp. Look for swelling within the leg, warmth to direct contact, redness or bluish discoloration, pain.

Lungs: Sudden onset of shortness of breath. A stabbing, sharp chest pain that gets worse to that deep breaths, fast heart beat and/or an unexplained cough that contain blood.

Heart: A clot that has went to the heart will give the symptoms of a heart attack, severe, crushing-type chest pain, and shortness of breath of air.

Brain: A clot that have traveled to the mental abilities are called an ischemic stroke, which is a blockage of hold. Its symptoms can are comprised severe/sudden headache, confusion, baffled vision, dizziness, weakness on the one hand of the body, reduction in balance or coordination/inability just to walk, inability to speak or maybe understand language.

Kidneys: Not as simple as leg or lung thrombus, but kidney clots make occur. The symptoms are sharp pain all that lower back, usually on the one hand, inability to urinate, hypertension, retention of fluid, swollen ankles, and shortness of them breath.

What Are Possibility Factors for Blood Clots?

Anyone can get a clot every time, but generally the risks are highest along with the following:

• Recent major surgery for a abdominal or pelvic queue
• Prolonged bed rest via a hospital, nursing home out of 3 days
• Knee and hip joint replacement
• Major trauma to the body like an auto accident or all fall
• Pregnancy, or current day childbirth

Other moderate, yet still large role, risks include:

• Sizing - over 65
• Smoking
• Long sitting during travel in the car, plane, train, bus
• Dehydration - inadequate water intake can cause blood shell out coagulate
• Under going chemotherapy
• Contraceptives pills or hormone replacement therapy
• Genetic predisposition
• Obesity/sedentary lifestyle

What Will i Do To Prevent Thrombus?

Avoiding a blood clot involves reducing your risk factors where completed. In general, the following guidelines permit you to prevent blood clots:

• Stop smoking. Period.
• If you travel for some time, take an "exercise" break where to get up and walk around for a few moments every 2 hours of travel. This is easier to do in car or coach bus travel, not so easy into a plane or train. Which means, you can get caused by your seat and walk on to the restroom, and/or the club car so often. Shift your position dwelling seat, doing leg pick exercises, or ankle rotation exercises within reach seat will also set aside.
• If you have been overweight and sedentary, make some healthy, nutritional, diet changes and rise and exercise with a minimum of 30 minutes of cardio a day. This is possible by taking a go walking, riding a bike, Wii fit in your living extra room, anything that gets you up using your blood moving.
• Stay hydrated! Drinking the correct period of water everyday is easily the most healthiest things you is going to do for yourself for grounds. Drink half your fat in water every solar, and a little more if you would consume caffeine. Your blood needs water to live an optimum density that's not so thick as to create clots and not so thin relating to run too freely and cause profuse bleeding do it yourself cut yourself.
