Growing pains in children can affect with quarter of all kids at some stage. The condition is getting distressing, but is self negative and goes away all alone eventually. The real concern about the diagnosis is the fact that term is often complemented a throw away good reputation any leg pain in children and i would suggest potentially serious problems that may be dismissed as growing cramps.
The true syndrome of growing pains is a very common bad cramp like pain for many upper calf muscles simply behind the knee that usually wakes the child from sleep and lasts around 20 minutes. It is most common in the 4-5 years age group, but can occur up to 12 growth cycles. The pain does not affect activities every day. The pains do not occur for the day and if they have, something else needs to be considered. The pain is also not deep for just a bone or in the kind knee joint and when it is, something else needs to be considered. There is also no specific blister, so if there is something else must be considered.
If the symptoms won't match the classic procedure for growing pains (in the upper calf and at night), then the differential diagnosis needs to bother with a juvenile type of arthritis for just a knee joint; a pain referral when hip; or a bone cancer if enormously . deep in the osseous matter.
The cause of the catch is not known with few of theories being proposed, in biochemical disturbances, hormonal imbalances and musculoskeletal fatigue. No evidence has been seen as yet to support merely a cause.
Parents and the child really should be reassured about the secure and self-limiting nature from a condition. When a child wakes due to pain, then simple rubbing or massage within the leg is usually all that is required to get the child directly sleep. In severe states, anti-inflammatory drugs at bed frame can help. The condition is self limiting and will resolve all alone eventually.
